Al Manakh Spaces initiative was established to engage the hyperlocal community and to anchor the Triennial within the neighbourhood of Al Manakh. Its aim is to create a shared space that serves as a platform for learning, experimentation, and reflection on the challenges of ecological and social sustainability in an urban context.

Through a series of co-design workshops with the neighbouring community, and in consultation with experts, it was decided to transform the area directly adjacent to the SAT headquarters into an urban farming space. In doing so, the Triennial recognizes the importance of experiencing and understanding how nature sustains life and how it shapes our ways of living. Urban farming plays a crucial role in this effort: it captures carbon, slows emissions, improves resource efficiency, reduces pressure on water infrastructures, minimizes waste, and contributes positively to the urban climate.

The Urban Bio Farm has been developed step by step through a series of workshops on farming and permaculture, combining theoretical knowledge with hands-on practice. Led by a sustainable farming specialist and enriched by the participation of neighbouring residents, field experts, and stakeholders, the initiative has strengthened both ecological practice and community engagement. Today, the program also includes an indoor workshop space, providing a venue for sessions during the hot summer months and expanding opportunities for year-round activities.

In parallel with the farm’s development, Al Manakh Spaces continues to address key challenges of sustainable practice in the region by offering workshops focused on urban farming and hyperlocal community building through outreach and gatherings. At the same time, it invites participants to share cultural knowledge and traditions related to agriculture, food, and cooking—creating opportunities for intergenerational and multicultural exchange. These activities encourage regular family participation, reinforcing the project’s role as both an environmental and social space.
