Established in 2009, and recognized by an Emiri Decree as an independent public body, Sharjah Art Foundation builds on a history of cultural collaboration and exchange that began with the first Sharjah Biennial in 1993. Since Sharjah Biennial 6 in 2003, the program has been led by SAF's President and Director Sheikha Hoor Al Qasimi. In response to a growing interest in contemporary art, SAF ensures continuity with the history of the Biennial while offering a year-round program of exhibitions and events.With a network of spaces spread across the Arts and Heritage areas, and expanding gradually across Sharjah, SAF brings a broad range of contemporary art and cultural programs to communities in the region. Cultivating a spirit of research, experimentation, and excellence, SAF offers support to artists and art practitioners, while acting as a catalyst for collaboration within the Middle East and beyond. The Directorate of Town Planning and Survey was established by Law No. 2 of 1998, as a government organization responsible for overseeing the comprehensive planning of Sharjah, including its cities and districts. DTPS prepares planning standards and regulations, including coordination of basic utilities and infrastructure, and keeps land records and data across the emirate. It also implements housing policy, and allocates residential, industrial, agricultural, and commercial plots to Sharjah’s citizens.An essential dimension of DTPS's mission is to conduct studies on transport and traffic planning, urban renewal projects, re-planning of old cities, and ensuring that urban and housing indicators are respected throughout Sharjah. With world-class facilities and a dynamic body of faculty and students, the College of Architecture, Art and Design, American University of Sharjah hosts one of the most prominent architecture programs in the region.Founded in 1997, CAAD offers several programs in design, as well as a graduate program in urban planning.
